Arts and Culture

The biggest annual cultural event in town is the Brevard Music Festival, celebrating music, learning and live performance. It’s hosted by the Brevard Music Center, a highly competitive music institute that every summer hosts a few hundred elite young musicians from all around the world. The Center’s public summer concert series happens at the same time, offering concerts from an eclectic gathering of musicians. Festival performers have included composer Burt Bacharach, bluegrass legends the Del McCoury Band, violinists Joshua Bell and Midori and opera greats Frederica von Stade and Kathleen Battle.

Smaller-scale local community offerings are plentiful, and include the nearby Flat Rock Playhouse (the state theater of North Carolina), Brevard Little Theater (Transylvania County’s official community theater), the Brevard Philharmonic and local choral and chamber music groups. Visual arts fans can check out the Sims Art Gallery of Brevard College, and jazz fans can groove to the annual Jazz at Brevard concert series. Writers, meanwhile, can find support at the Brevard-based Transylvania Writers Alliance.

Local entertainment with a WNC flavor includes weekly bluegrass jam sessions, summertime street festivals and the city’s beloved White Squirrel Festival, a family-friendly, music-packed outdoor springtime fest celebrating the city’s population of rare white squirrels, rumored to have descended from escapees from a traveling circus.
