Bat Cave North Carolina
Yes Virginia, there are bats in Bat Cave, and they are indeed the reason for city’s unusual name. This unincorporated area is home to Bat Cave Mountain, where the largest granite fissure cave in North America is home to the harmless Indiana bat, an endangered species.
Bat Cave lies in the hardwood forests of Hickory Nut Gorge, a natural valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Chimney Rock Park and the waters of Lake Lure. But there’s water closer than Lake Lure – feel free to spend the day swimming or boating on Bat Cave’s Rocky Broad River. History and literature nuts take note: novelist and Union Army general Lew Wallace finished the stage-play version of his novel Ben Hur here while vacationing at a local inn.
