Hendersonville and Flat Rock North Carolina

Poet-novelist Carl Sandburg spent the last twenty-two years of his life here, writing poetry as his wife Lillian raised her prize dairy goats on thirty acres of prime Carolina pastureland. Other Hendersonville slices of distinctly American history include Johnson Farm, a former boarding house and mountain retreat where the innkeeper and her sons treated visitors to homemade ice cream and card-games in the parlor. Picnic lunches on the verdant grounds are encouraged… In autumn, this part of the world enjoys the splendid carpet of rich fall color that has made Western North Carolina famous for "leaf looking" – the kind that natives get to do from their bedroom windows.

The Hendersonville area is home to the Flat Rock Playhouse, the 485-seat state theatre of North Carolina that’s known as one of the best summer theatres in the nation. Look for musicals (Singin’ in the Rain staged complete with rain showers), drama, and celebrity guests like Burt Reynolds and June Havoc. Golfers take note: the area is served by a number of links, including the Etowah Valley Country Club, Orchard Trace Golf Club, the Hendersonville Country Club, Champion Hills Club, Crooked Creek Golf Club and Cummings Cove Golf and Country Club.

Hendersonville and Flat Rock each lie within the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, a part of WNC given a special designation by President Bush in recognition of its abundance of historical, cultural and natural assets.
