LEE-sester or Lester? Depending on who you ask, one or the other will do for this very rural, very small-town area just west of Asheville. No matter how you say it, this pastoral community was named for the English city of the same name on the River Soar. A slow-paced, small unincorporated community, Leicester offers few amenities in town, but lies only ten minutes away from Asheville’s electric downtown heart.
Home to champion dairy goats as well as red-tailed hawks, chickadees, flickers and singing thrushes, Leicester offers mountain views, all four seasons, sunsets over Newfound Gap, whitewater rafting down the French Broad River and an herb nursery producing ninety-four fragrant varieties of scented geranium. "Downtown" is the Leicester Grill, an auto repair shop and a family-owned grocery store.
