Marshall North Carolina
A mountain community near the Tennessee border where families still raise cattle and an artisan bread-maker makes peasant bread by hand, Marshall has a landscape rich enough to feed both body and soul. Sandy Bottom Trail Rides – a Marshall farm in the same family for three generations – offers guided horseback rides and even old-fashioned buggy rides. Marshall remains connected to an American past that never quite disappeared – to those who know where to look for it.
This part of the world is home to traditional folk art – handmade quilts, dolls and rugs – that are celebrated annually at the Madison County Heritage Festival, a daylong celebration of mountain music and art. The festival is hosted by Mars Hill College, a campus more than a century old, with a view of Mount Pisgah and Clingman’s Peak. Nearby scenic attractions include Mount Mitchell (highest peak east of the Mississippi), the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Craggy Gardens and Linville Falls.
When the chilly mountain winter makes you want to head for the comfort of home, warm yourself by the fire and then head to the nearby Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre for musicals, comedies and world premiere historic drama. Marshall might be in the mountains, but the mountains have always been home to music, story, culture, art and dance – and, of course, to the remarkable beauty of the mountains themselves.
