Montreat North Carolina
With a name that’s a contraction of the phrase “Mountain Retreat,” tiny Montreat is reached by one road and one road only. Sit by the gray stone gates that mark Montreat’s only entrance, and not a soul can enter the town by car saved by first driving under your watchful eye. Famous evangelist and Presidential adviser Billy Graham has his own mountain getaway here. Montreat is a tiny, virtually crime-free community where winding roads run through neighborhoods served by a mountain spring, and a single post office serves the needs of everyone in town.
Lake Susan is a popular spot for rest and relaxation, a relatively small and shallow lake with a visitor area complete with rocking chairs and a lakeside view. Take a leisurely paddleboat ride or just relax on a bench, feeding the ducks and the lake’s giant goldfish. Montreat Park offers a creek of refreshingly cold mountain water in summer and a meadow of daffodils in spring. Far too tiny to offer much in the way of culture (the population remains steady at less than a thousand souls), Montreat borders Black Mountain, a cultural destination with a vibrant downtown scene, bookstores, antiquing, fine dining, coffee shops and live music.
