Old Fort North Carolina
If you’ve never heard bluegrass or old-timey mountain music played live, won’t you stop by this little mountain town that time forgot? Home to a completely non-commercialized gathering of local musicians where homemade concession treats are fifty cents each, Old Fort hosts a Friday night mountain music jam that’s been going strong for over twenty years. Old Fort Mountain Music is a family event – in more ways than one, since not only are families welcome, some families have formed their own bands. Look for old favorites like "Poke Sallet" and "Tennessee Stud" – and bring your guitar if you’ve got one.
The town’s name comes from the fact that it once really was a fort, over 200 years ago when it served an outpost of the Colonies. Nearby Asheville and Black Mountain provide a little glitz and citification, but Old Fort is all about the mountains. Approach Old Fort from the east and you’ll drive right through Hickory Nut Gorge, a place of such stunning natural beauty that a camera is pretty much a must or you’ll never quite believe it really happened. The drive down I-40 into Old Fort is one of the finest introductions to WNC a visitor could ask for.
Bring your guitar. Bring your camera. And don’t miss Pioneer Day in April – we hear the Boy Scouts are planning something special this year.
