Swannanoa North Carolina

Named for the river that runs through it, unincorporated Swannanoa borders the city of Asheville, the hub of Western North Carolina culture. A town nestled into a river valley of the Blue Ridge range, Swannanoa’s claim to fame is the Swannanoa Gathering, an annual summer shindig of folk art and mountain music. North Carolina is proud of its heritage of bluegrass pickin’, old-time music, handmade dulcimers and storytelling, and the annual Gathering lets people from all over learn about mountain musical traditions – and also enjoy a week’s worth of concerts from local and national acts. Carolina mountains are quiet and peaceful, but they manage to attract their share of attention, especially in the world of music.

The local museum tells Swannanoa’s story – the native people who gave it its name, the first white settlers, the nearby watershed that provides most of the area with tap water that’s better-tasting than most brands of bottled spring water. After a visit here, some South Floridians are never able to drink their native tap water again...
