Weaverville North Carolina
Like much of Western North Carolina, tiny Weaverville – population about 2500 – first found fame as a nineteenth-century center for posh resorts where wealthy Gilded Age families vacationed among clear-running creeks and rolling mountains turning purple under a Carolina sunset. When author O. Henry was wooed away from the Big Apple to marry a Weaverville girl who wouldn’t give up her green mountain home, the couple compromised by setting up house in nearby Asheville. Like so many communities in the area, Weaverville mixes small-town mountain charm with proximity to Asheville’s more urban comforts of spa facials, fresh swordfish and ballroom dancing at a downtown club. Go to Asheville for Shakespeare and opera and the Cajun food. Stay in Weaverville for the annual high school homecoming parade.
There really are places that time forgot. And some of those places even have a four-star golf course.
